THE SPACE BETWEEN BORDERS

The Space Between Borders explores an in-between limbo state of existence and identity. It describes a place where “Home” no longer welcomes you, yet your new home is surrounded by an impenetrable wall of bureaucracy. You cannot go back, you cannot move forward, so here you are right now – stuck.

Stuck in between.

Each series of works tells what this “space” could be, in reality, but also mentally, through a different lens. This exhibition investigates the complex relationships within the 2019-2020 Hong Kong protests—from power and obedience, to cold-blooded and fiery passion. It examines the roles played in political movements while reflecting on my personal relationship with my homeland. As an artist with strong ties to Hong Kong and Australia, I feel I have no choice but to create and speak for those who cannot.

Living in a state of inescapable crisis and persistent unsurety and insecurity, for many individuals and communities, is a daily reality. I do not expect everyone to understand this fearful state of existence and the severe, prolonged impact it has on mental and physica well-being. However, I ask that even if you cannot fully comprehend or relate to the gravity of this state – acknowledge it. Do not let this disappear into the background of your mind.

If you are from Hong Kong, or another country that is facing war, conflict, and pain, please know that you are not alone.

To my fellow brave fighters, be water, my friend.
