Rigid materials aren’t thought to create threads, yet metal at minute scale is commonly used as a threaded medium. In HEAVY // lite, metal and other weighty materials are the thread that links the works of each artist’s exploration of composite materiality. The works in this group exhibition display composites of heavy elements contrasted with light imagery, light fabrics, or light illumination. This double-entendre in the ‘light’-ness aspect of the exhibition brings a range of approaches to composition that give the experiencer multiple layers to uncover.
In form we find distortion and curve, rigid and square, sharp and soft. In concept we find echos of social crisis systems, gender perception, and human functionality all portrayed through sculptural wall, floor and suspended artworks. Each artwork in HEAVY // lite pushes the edges of the categories that we’d try to fit each work into. This is a show of the innovative practice of each of the participating artists; Kate Bohunnis, Dave Court, Miles Dunne, House of Vnholy, Jennifer Mathews, Loren Orsillo and Nat Penney.
